Building a Wardrobe? Start with the Right Shoes!

How many of you have made the mistake of following what is on-trend at the moment and rushed out to buy a pair of stiletto heels or sky-high platforms because you wanted to keep your look feeling as fresh and updated as possible? I am so guilty of countless fashion mistakes like that which were not only financially painful but left signs of physical damage as well. Not pretty at all.

When it comes to shoes, love your feet first. Now, we all want our fancy Louboutins, Jimmy Choos, or Blahniks, but make sure that a) you can walk in them and b) they don't pinch your feet when you're in the store plunking down your credit card to make that purchase. In other words, read my lips: "Do not lie to yourself!" If you need a size 41, don't leave the store with a size 40 because you have to have those shoes! Hasn't happened to you? Well, just label me a slave to fashion! Take it from me; this is not the way you're going to build a functional yet beautiful shoe collection. Whether you are just starting out or reinvigorating your closet, you're going to need the basics first. Let's consider the essentials:

Day: the Decolleté (Pump)

  • Every woman needs a pair of classic black pumps or décolleté for everyday use. These heels should be as comfortable as possible so you will want to wear them, and they should not have a super high heel like a stiletto (unless you really can walk in them for stretches at a time) or be too flat. So, try a stylish mid-heel (5-9 cm) or kitten heel (3-6 cm). Why black? Because it goes with just about everything.

Tip: If you find a style you like, buy a pair in another color: navy, brown, beige, grey, or snakeskin.

Evening: A Slightly Higher Heel

  • Shoes for the evening are also a good staple to add and can have a higher heel, but don't exaggerate. Heel height is something that you have to be happy with, so know the limits of your comfort.

The length of the heel worn should always flatter. Though height is always desirable as it elongates the leg, making it appear sexier and thinner, women need not teeter when walking, so it's a good idea to keep this in mind as you are creating your look.

Once you have mastered the basics, you can then graduate to the stilettos and platforms. You can even take a walk on the wild side and be extravagant or experimental.

With the right investment in several good pairs of shoes that are functional yet are beautiful and at the same time irresistible, you can afford to take risks, as long as it's not with the comfort of your beautiful feet.
