When in Doubt, Wear Black!

Whether you are building a wardrobe or already have your basics, sometimes, you still feel you have nothing to wear. So, when I am in doubt, I wear black. For some, it is an easy go-to, but I love it for its beauty and simplicity. It sends a message of strength and power.

Black also represents style and elegance. Of course, this depends on the fabric and quality of the garments themselves, but in my opinion, black is the first and foremost color every woman should use to build her wardrobe. The reasons are simple:

  • Black is basic and goes with everything.

  • Black takes you from morning to evening—from work to a cocktail party.

  • Black can be dressed up or down with the right accessories (good jewelry, a great bag, and beautiful shoes).

I am convinced that the Italians come in first when wearing black. They value it as it deserves to be, with flair, grace, and sophistication.  A friend of mine, who is always fabulously dressed, really wears it well. On one occasion, she arrived at a dinner party after leaving her office, perfectly put together. I remember the door opened and in she strode with a black fitted cashmere coat, slim black pants, and a black cashmere turtleneck. On one wrist, a Rolex, on the other a Tiffany silver bangle.  In one hand, a bottle of Amarone for her hosts, on her arm, a black Hermès Birkin, and around her neck, a black Loro Piana pashmina. Roger Vivier black heels with a silver buckle, topped things off and added a bit of understated sparkle. All black from head to toe. So chic. Her version of a perfect off-duty look, by the way: a dark navy/black denim pair of Gucci jeans, a black Richmond silk blouse with a pussycat bow and, black Prada pumps. For my friend, style is an ingrained value.

So, when you’re stuck and staring at your closet in the morning, reach for that perfect black outfit.  Every woman should have the following:

  • The most flattering version for her body type of the little black dress. One for fall/winter months and another for warmer temperatures.

She should also add a black skirt or pants suit to her wardrobe. Again, one for colder months and another for spring and summer.

  • For an off-duty look, a pair of black trousers or black jeans, whichever is most comfortable and complimentary to her figure.

  • For fall/winter, a black silk blouse and a black wool/cashmere or cashmere-blend crewneck sweater or turtleneck.

  • For spring/summer, a black short-sleeve T-shirt in good quality cotton.

Too much black? Well, you can always accessorise and add a splash of color. In the winter, add a colourful Hermès scarf or bright pashmina. Red or electric blue statement necklaces or gold or silver are also great accents to make a black outfit pop. Remember to finish every look with a good bag and good quality shoes. The right accessories are so essential!
